Trains on Teesside

I'm spending an increasing amount of my time looking at the railways around Teesside.

Middlesbrough is a busy hub and terminus of the Tees Valley Line, with good connections to the Durham Coast and Esk Valley Lines. The heavy industry and ports of Teesside are located only a few miles to the east, with the busy Tees Goods Yard less than a mile to the west.

In addition to frequent goods traffic, Middlesbrough also has good passenger rail connections to the north of England with hourly TransPennine Express services between Redcar Central and Manchester Airport. Additionally, since the time this video was filmed, LNER runs a daily express service from Middlesbrough to London Kings Cross.

The signals in the Middlesbrough area are now controlled from a panel at Network Rail's York Operations Centre (ROC), which has resulted in the signal box to the immediate west of the station, still shown on the video, being demolished.

This video represents a fairly typical working day at Middlesbrough. You'll see TransPennine Express class 185 "Desiro" DMUs and Northern Trains class 156 "Super Sprinter" and class 158 "Express Sprinter" DMUs. There is also a DB Cargo class 66 hauling a load of steel slabs from Scunthorpe to Lackenby.

Footage was captured using a Panasonic HC-VX1 fitted with a Rode VideoMic Go.
