Iconic British steam locomotive "Flying Scotsman" was on duty today, hauling the Railway Touring Company's "The Hadrian" steam special.
The LNER Class A3 Pacific locomotive, bearing the famous number 60103 (formerly 4472), was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and built at Doncaster Works in 1929. It broke two world records, being the first steam locomotive to break 100 mph and run 422 miles non-stop.
Train 1Z64 started off diesel-hauled at Derby and headed northwards to Doncaster. Flying Scotsman took charge at Doncaster and hauled the train to Carlisle via the stunning Settle and Carlisle Railway.
I was waiting at Carlisle to watch the train pull into the city's Citadel Railway Station. The station was exceptionally busy because a second steam special, The Northern Belle, which was hauled by 60163 Tornado, had passed through earlier in the day.
The Hadrian, now running as train 1Z66, was due to run via the Tyne Valley Line and East Coast Main Line for the return journey back to Derby. That being the case I relocated to Hexham in the mistaken belief that the platforms would be quieter.
Things didn't quite go to plan, with The Hadrian being severely delayed due to technical problems and trespassers on the line. When the train did eventually approach Hexham, I was disappointed to see 47237 leading. A fault with Flying Scotman's AWS meant it was relegated to passenger status.
To make matters even worse a Northern Trains Sprinter was occupying Hexham platform 2, which totally obscured the approach of The Hadrian.
I apologise about the various bodily appendages that crept into the corner of my shots. Some people were totally oblivious (and others inconsiderate) to the fact I was stood there filming. I also apologise for the mark on my lens, which I never noticed until I was reviewing the footage back at home.
Filmed on 24th July 2021.
Footage was captured using a Panasonic HC-VX1 (aff. link) fitted with a Rode VideoMic Go (aff. link).
