LNER Peppercorn Class A1 locomotive "Tornado" was in charge of the Northern Belle steam excursion from Coventry to Carlisle earlier today.
It was an unexpected outing for Tornado, which was being used as a replacement for 6201 "Princess Elizabeth". At the time of filming "Lizzy" as she is affectionately known was undergoing repairs to a cracked boiler.
The Northern Belle started its journey at Coventry as train 1Z56. For this initial leg of the journey the eleven Pullman coach train was hauled by West Coast Railways' 57601 "Windsor Castle" with 47854 "Diamond Jubilee" bringing up the rear.
My film begins with the Northern Belle approaching Lancaster Station at a gentle pace under cautionary signals. It continued up the West Coast Main Line to Carnforth, where the leading locomotive Windsor Castle was swapped for Tornado.
We see the train for a second time as it hammers through Oxenholme Lake District Station with Tornado now in charge. It then continued its journey northwards to Carlisle, where it arrived around 10 minutes early.
I met two familiar faces at Oxenholme in the shape of Brian (third engineer) and Richard (Harnetty Railways). You can view their footage of the day on their respective channels.
I made the journey across to Kirkby Stephen to catch the Northern Belle on the return leg of its journey, which was via the picturesque Settle and Carlisle Railway.
In characteristic Settle and Carlisle fashion the rain was blowing in hard when I arrived at Kirkby Stephen. Fortunately there was a slight calming of the weather, so I was able to catch a decent passing shot of Tornado as train 1Z57 swept through the station around 5 minutes early.
On arrival at Hellifield, not shown on my video, Tornado was swapped again with Windsor Castle for the final push towards Coventry.
Filmed on 29th July 2021.
Footage was captured using a Panasonic HC-VX1 (aff. link) fitted with a Rode VideoMic Go (aff. link).
