Keighley and Worth Valley Railway: Oakworth Station

The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway (KWVR) is a five mile long heritage railway line running from the large West Yorkshire market town of Keighley in the north to the small village of Oxenhope in the south.

The railway, which fell victim to the Beeching cuts, closed to regular passenger and freight trains in 1962. Fortunately a group of local enthusiasts clubbed together to resurrect the mothballed line as a heritage railway from 1968.

Today I'm visiting Oakworth Station, which was made famous as the setting of the 1970s cinematic version of E. Nesbit's novel The Railway Children. The much-loved, family favourite features Jenny Agutter in the leading role of Roberta (Bobbie) Waterbury. It also stars Bernard Cribbins as Albert (Perks) Perkins the station porter at Oakworth.

A series of special events are taking place on the KWVR to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the movie. We see local school children reenacting a scene from the movie where the children save a train from disaster by warning it of a landslip.

We see several steam-hauled trains passing through the station.

Locomotives shown in this video:

- United States of America Transportation Corp. Class S160 2-8-0 No. 5820

- Midland Railway 4F 0-6-0 No. 43924

We also see the modern day Perks the porter operating the station's manual gate level crossing and protecting signals.

Filmed on 29th August 2021.

Footage was captured using a Panasonic HC-VX1 (aff. link) fitted with a Rode VideoMic Go (aff. link).
