An Infrequent Visitor: LNER Azumas at Carlisle

Every Autumn the East Coast Main Line between Newcastle and Edinburgh is closed over several weekends for essential maintenance work.

LNER services between London Kings Cross and Scotland are diverted via the Tyne Valley Line and continue their journey northwards via the West Coast route.

LNER's class 800 bi-mode Azuma's are used for this work, as the Tyne Valley Line has no electrification. The trains travel non-stop between Newcastle and Carlisle, occasionally stopping for staffing reasons at Carlisle.

Ordinarily, passengers are not able to join or alight these diverted services at Carlisle.

This 16 minute video shows various LNER diverted services passing through Carlisle on a busy Saturday.

Filmed on 9th October 2021.

Footage was captured using a Panasonic HC-VX1 (aff. link) fitted with a Rode VideoMic Go (aff. link).
