LNER Azumas on the Tyne Valley Line Diversion

Network Rail undertakes engineering work on the East Coast Main Line between Newcastle and Edinburgh in early autumn every year.

This work, which necessitates the closure of the line to passenger trains, usually takes place over several weekends at the end of September and beginning of October. It is scheduled to begin on Saturday, 24th September 2022 and will run for three weekends.

Rail replacement coaches run between Newcastle and Edinburgh, but LNER also operates an hourly reduced service diverted via the Tyne Valley Line, Carlisle, the West Coast Main Line and Carstairs Junction.

At more than 3 hours, this journey takes more than twice as long as the direct route north on the East Coast Main Line. As there is no electrification on the Tyne Valley Line, LNER's bi-mode class 800 "Azuma" DEMUs are used for the job. The reduced LNER timetable frees up stock, so many of these Azumas run in tandem.

I have taken the luxury of booking a first return between Newcastle and Edinburgh on Saturday, 8th October, so I can experience the full diverted journey in the flesh. Hopefully I'll get enough footage to put together some sort of review.

This video looks at a day of LNER diversions along the Tyne Valley Line on Saturday, 25th September 2021. It features footage from Hexham, Wylam, Haydon Bridge and Haltwhistle Stations.

Footage was captured using a Panasonic HC-VX1 (aff. link) fitted with a Rode VideoMic Go (aff. link).
