Fortunately north Lincolnshire is still one of them with regular trains of imported coal heading from the Port of Immingham to Ratcliffe Power Station and British Steel Scunthorpe.
This video was filmed on a breezy autumn day at Barnetby Station.
We see the passage of four coal trains:
- 6C75, the 1055 Immingham Bulk Terminal CP1 to Scunthorpe BSC Coal Handling Plant. DB Cargo's 66034 hauls a rake of 21 loaded HTA bogie hopper coal wagons.
- 4R79, the 1005 Doncaster Down Decoy to Immingham Humber International Terminal. GB Railfreight's 66787 hauls a rake of 24 empty HTA wagons.
- 4C75, the 1339 Scunthorpe BSC Coal Handling Plant to Immingham Bulk Terminal CP1. DB Cargo's 66034 hauls a rake of 21 empty HTA wagons.
- 6M81, the 1345 Immingham Humber International Terminal to Ratcliffe Power Station. GB Railfreight's 66787 hauls a rake of 24 loaded HTA wagons.
Despite the UK having hundreds of years worth of very good quality coal reserves, it is now cheaper and more efficient for the generators to import their coal supplies from eastern Europe and Russia.
Ratcliffe Power Station is scheduled for closure in 2024. It will be the UK's last remaining coal fired power station.
Another UK industry destined for the history books.
Filmed on 25th October 2021.
Footage was captured using a Panasonic HC-VX1 (aff. link) fitted with a Rode VideoMic Go (aff. link).
